To hear some people tell it, the Confederacy of the Old South was not about preserving state-sanctioned slavery; nor is the Confederate battle flag a 21st-century symbol of hate. The people making these denials go to great lengths to avoid owning up to historical fact, and they sanitize history and heritage so they will not have to.
